Torq Lite Series Disc Brakes
We have added mechanical disc brakes to our affordable product line to provide our consumer yet another opportunity to Origin-8 their bike. There are 2 models in the Torq Lite Series: The Series 6 and the Series 5. Let’s talk, in depth, for a moment about this new addition to the Origin-8 family.
To the untrained eye both disc brake calipers look to be very similar in style however there are some unique hidden features that we will take a closer look at before we install them. The Torq Lite Series 6 disc brakes (bottom in photo) have a barrel adjuster at the cable stop to allow the rider the flexibility to adjust the cable tension manually. Also, located on the inside end of the caliper is a convenient dial adjust that can be easily turned by hand to increase or decrease the distance between the rotor and the inside brake pad. This feature is extremely important when setting up these disc brakes for the first time and when adjusting for pad wear in the future.
The Torq Lite Series 5 disc brakes (top in photo) have a similar pad adjustment dial system, however on this caliper, Origin-8 featured the dial adjust on both the inside and the outside pad to make it possible to completely dial in your brakes with no tools. Both the Series 5 and the Series 6 systems include POST and IS mounting brackets for any application.
On the Bike

Installation was cake due to the included IS/Post adapter. Once we got the cables strung up, adjustment proved to be extremely simple because of the no tool adjustment dial which allowed us to adjust the inner pad by hand. Riding these brakes is a pleasure. They have every bit of stopping power of your average hydraulic system when setup correctly. On the first ride we experienced a tiny bit of cable stretch which was easily accounted for, in the middle of the ride, by moving the inner pad closer to the rotor. The on the go adjustment of the Torq Lite Series calipers is irreplaceable.
The Torq Lite Series brakes which includes caliper, rotor and mounting hardware, retail at around $65-70 per wheel in the box. You can order these through almost any independent bike dealer.
